Adult ADHD Assessment & Diagnosis

What Does an ADHD Assessment at ClinPsych Consulting involve?

The assessment includes an interview designed to evaluate the presence of ADHD symptoms focusing on inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, a self-reported developmental history and, if possible, supporting information provided by a family member or someone who has known you for a long time.

This assessment process ensures a holistic understanding your  strengths and challenges and is designed to provide valuable insights into your unique profile, aiding in the development of targeted strategies and interventions for optimal support whether an ADHD diagnosis is given or not.

An ADHD assessment usually comes in two parts:

Part 1- Initial screening

This is an initial screening assessment to help establish whether it is appropriate for the individual to undergo full diagnostic assessment. It is a general neurodevelopmental screen meaning that ADHD as well as Autism can be considered, as needed. Consideration will also be given to mental health. The initial assessment usually comprises of an appointment lasting up to 1.5 hours during which the clinician will explore the presenting issues and conduct a concise developmental history. If a further screening measure is required, a QB check will be administered.

As part of this assessment, the clinician will discuss with you whether there are enough considerations associated with ADHD to warrant full diagnostic testing - on our ADHD or our combined Autism/ADHD assessment care pathway. If there are, you will then need to confirm whether you wish to proceed to part 2 of the assessment.

Part 2- Full diagnostic assessment:

This is the diagnostic part of the assessment process. It will usually comprise of one or two appointments, taking approximately 2 hours in total, where a semi-structured interview is completed.

Assessments are paced to the individual and rest breaks will be given where needed. Close relatives or partners can be invited to provide background information, with the agreement of the client. Part 2 of the assessment process usually takes up to 4 weeks to complete.

The composition of assessments varies between clients, including some or all of the following:

  • DIVA-5 Semi-structured interview designed to explore ADHD symptoms

  • Cognitive assessment e.g. tests of attention or executive functioning

  • Clinic observations

  • Review of reports/questionnaires from educational settings, the workplace and/or family/partner
