Child ADHD Assessment & Diagnosis
What Does an ADHD Assessment at ClinPsych Consulting involve?
The assessment includes an interview designed to evaluate the presence of ADHD symptoms focusing on inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, a developmental history provided by a carer or parent.
This assessment process ensures a holistic understanding of the child’s strengths and challenges and is designed to provide valuable insights into the child’s unique profile, aiding in the development of targeted strategies and interventions for optimal support whether an ADHD diagnosis is given or not.
An ADHD assessment usually comes in two parts:
Part 1- Initial screening
The initial consultation gathers comprehensive background information, during which the clinician will explore the presenting issues and conduct a concise developmental history.Consideration will also be given to prior mental health difficulties. If a further screening measure is required, a QB check will also be administered during the initial consultation.
Participants: This session typically includes parents or guardians, and the child, ensuring that we get a full picture of the child’s behaviour across different settings.
Duration: The initial consultation generally lasts up to 90 minutes.
At the end of this initial consultation, the clinician will discuss with you whether there are enough considerations associated with ADHD to warrant full diagnostic testing. If there are, you will then need to confirm whether you wish to proceed to the full diagnostic assessment.
Part 2- Full diagnostic assessment:
This is the diagnostic part of the assessment process. It will usually comprise of two appointments, taking approximately 2 hours in total, where a semi-structured interview is completed. Our part 2 assessments will involve a multidisciplinary team in order that professionals can agree on a diagnosis.
Assessments are paced to the individual and rest breaks will be given where needed. The assessment process will usually involve a combination of parent/carer and child participation. Part 2 of the assessment process usually takes up to 4 weeks to complete.
The composition of assessments varies between clients, including some or all of the following:
DIVA-5 Semi-structured interview designed to explore ADHD symptoms
